A Felony DUI Will Change Your Life!

One of the questions we get asked the most is: what happens if I get a felony conviction?

That's a great question! Believe it or not, there are literally hundreds of consequences of a felony conviction. Your gun rights, professional licenses, employment status, and many other aspects of your life may be impacted. A felony conviction can ruin a person's life.

There are felony DUI offenses. You don't have to be in an accident or harm anyone to get a felony DUI. The consequences of a felony DUI are severe!

Through a series of blog posts, we are going to highlight many of the consequences of a felony conviction. Here are just five life changing consequences of a felony conviction.

Nurses – You must notify the state!

If you are a nurse and you get a felony conviction, you must notify the nursing board. 49 Pa.Code § 39.92. Once the nursing board gets this information, they may take disciplinary action. Depending on the offense, you can lose your nursing license. Everything you worked for – all of the schooling, student loans, and hard work – are out the window with a felony conviction.

You can't get unemployment benefits if you are in jail!

In this day and age, losing your job has never been more real. Reliable, solid businesses are closing every day. They will never re-open. If you are convicted and go to jail, you cannot get unemployment benefits for the period you are incarcerated. 43 P.S. § 802.6. You are more likely to be incarcerated after a felony conviction.

You can't be a police officer!

Police jobs are good jobs, but you cannot be police officer, or continue with police work, if you have a felony conviction. A Commonwealth, municipal agency, transportation authority (or any entity) cannot employ and person, or continue to employ a person, who has a felony conviction. 53 P.S. § 752.3. Your career aspirations can be ruined with a felony conviction.

You can't vote!

One of the most basic rights to citizenship is the right to vote. It's our only opportunity to participate in the political process without running for office. If you get convicted of a felony, you will lose your right to vote. 25 Pa.C.S. § 1301.

You can't be a juror!

In addition to voting, jury service is one of the precious rights we hold. It allows us to sit in judgement of another person. Your decision as a juror can affect someone for the rest of their life. Your decision can never be erased. If you get convicted of a felony, you will not be permitted to serve as a juror.
